Behind the stepping stones is Thorpe Cloud, an isolated limestone hill lying between the villages of Thorpe and Ilam at the southern end of Dovedale.
The valley of Dovedale is cut by the River Dove and runs for just over 3 miles between Milldale in the north and a wooded ravine near Thorpe Cloud and Bunster Hill in the south.
Thorpe Clouds elevation is 287 metres (942 ft) and is owned by the National Trust.
